A podiatrist can assess the thickened area of skin, check whether it is a corn or callus, and consider whether there may be an underlying cause such as pressure from footwear, a bunion, hammer toe or another foot shape or biomechanical factor. Treatment may include gently removing the thickened skin to reduce pressure and relieve pain, as well as padding, footwear advice or other measures to protect the area. If appropriate, an insole or orthotic may also help reduce pressure and the risk of the corn or callus returning.
